Coronavirus Causes School Closures


Governors in the United States have ordered that statewide school closures continue for the rest of the academic year to help reduce the spread of the coronavirus. “The team of doctors advising us have determined it would be unsafe to allow students to gather at schools for the foreseeable future,” Gov. Greg Abbot said. The massive spread of the coronavirus has shocked the nation and has led to many changes in order to help keep people safe. Businesses and schools are amongst the massive closures of the world. Social distancing is suggested to lessen the risk of catching the deadly virus.

School campuses are shut down but classes are set to continue online. For students who do not have access to online sources packets are made available for pick for some schools. Free school lunches are being offered at different locations for pick up for those in need.



Teachers may return to campuses under controlled conditions to conduct remote instruction and perform administrative duties. Parents now have to homeschool their children to the best of their ability. Teachers are making themselves readily available for phone conversations as well as video chat. It is encouraged by the school district for students, parents, and teachers to actively communicate for an effective learning experience. Structure is key to a conducive environment in the home. Most parents are creating a routine for their children to keep them on pace with their schoolwork.


College classes are resuming solely online with the assistance of their professors. Video sessions are replacing the classroom and communication is mostly through email. Leaders have sent out emails to update the students on changes and latest news. Graduation ceremonies are being pushed back and alternative celebration options are in the making due to the coronavirus. While in person contact may be preferred, everyone is making the best out of the virtual world.

Texas doctors and hospitals are taking steps to make the process of giving birth as safe as possible. Most doctors did not accept new patients once the city shutdown due to Covid-19. They were only assisting current patients with medical emergencies. As cities slowly reopen they are now accepting new patients. Check-ups and appointments are spaced out and are being conducted verbally as well as in person visits. Hospitals have precautions in place upon entry of the facilities. A face mask must be worn and social distancing is required. A medical screening is required once entering and questions about your current health will be asked. Sanitation stations are set up for visitors and medical staff. Visitation hours and guest are limited. Some hospitals are not allowing a birthing partner in the room while delivering and others are allowing only one.


Health officials have said pregnant patients do not seem to be experiencing more infections or severe symptoms than non-pregnant adults. Pregnant women should follow the same precautions as non-pregnant adults. During delivery the goal for doctors is for the pregnant patient have a healthy atmosphere through the labor and postpartum period.


Paying attention to any emotional and psychological changes during pregnancy is important to keep the mother and baby healthy.There are resources pregnant women can utilize at this time of need. Coronavirus recoveries have risen in the state of Texas. “The number of Covid -19 recoveries in Texas will soon exceed the number of cases in the state”, said Governor Greg Abbott during a press conference on reopening Texas. According to Abbott Texas has the third most recoveries from Covid-19 in America and says the state’s hospitalization rate has held steady.


The state’s slow reopening will begin Friday, May 1, Phase two which will happen around May 18, will open more businesses and allow those businesses who opened in phase one to expand its operations. It will also allow the capacity to 50 percent.


Outdoor sports are also allowed as long as it does not involve more than four participants. Places of worship can hold expanded services beginning Friday.


Those living in Harris County were mandated to begin wearing a mask or facial covering under Judge Lina Hidalgo’s order. Abbott said, “We strongly recommend that everyone wear a mask. However, it’s not a mandate, and we made it clear, no jurisdiction can impose any type of penalty or fine. Coverings can be a mask, scarf, bandanna or handkerchief.
